The Wusta Region
The Wusta region lies to the south of the Dakhiliyah and Dhahirah regions and enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year. Bordering the Arabian Sea to the east, the Empty Quarter desert to the west and the Governorate of Dhofar to the south, it has a large number of oil and gas producing fields. It is comprised of 4 wilayats. Three of these Mahawt, al Duqm and al Jazer are on the Arabian Sea while the fourth Haima is inland.
According to 2007 estimates, the Wusta region has a population of 27,338. The government attaches great importance to the development of the Wusta region, which is a favourite with conservationists. Whales, dolphins and turtles are frequent visitors to the Wusta’s waters and its lagoons are resting areas for many thousands of migratory birds. Work is currently in progress on the construction of a port and ship repair dry dock at al Duqm. As the population is sparse and spread over small, far-flung population centers, the region obtains its clean drinking water supplies from purpose-built desalination plants.

Duqm, around 550 kms from Muscat, in the Wusta region. The dry dock scheme is due for completion end-2010, and the whole port project by 2012.
The road system is being upgraded, particularly the main highways In terms of per capita spending, the Wusta region has ranked second only to the Governorate of Musandam in expenditure on development projects over the course of more than one Five-year Plan.
Recent initiatives include a number of water, electricity, road, fishing harbour, health and education projects. Life is changing fast in this once sleepy region and, like the rest of the country, the Wusta is steadily moving ahead towards increased progress and prosperity.
