National Security of Oman

In a region of recent turbulence, Oman is widely recognized as a country of peace and security much appreciated and enjoyed by tourists and short-term visitors as well as its citizens and residents.
Security is regarded as an essential precondition for national development and the flowering of individual talents and potential. Sultan Qaboos and his government are determined to guarantee the peace and stability on which a secure state is built and maintained, allowing the country and its citizens to achieve their fullest potential.
The Sultan’s Armed Forces (SAF), the Royal Guard of Oman (RGO), the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the other security services play a vital role in safeguarding the Sultanate’s security and stability. A study issued in May 2008 by the Intelligence Unit of the London-based British magazine ‘The Economist’ classed Oman in its ‘Global Peace Index 2008’ (GPI) as the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa, and ranking it 25th worldwide.
